Michael Phelps is prepared to take on the Olympics once again – this time by winning 10 gold medals. After scoring 8 gold medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing – the biggest haul in a single Olympic swimming event, he is set to break that record at the 2012 Olympics in London after it was reported that he will participate in 7 swimming trial events and 3 relay events.

Phelps is a distinguished athlete with monumental achievements in the Olympic Games and is the swimming world’s most sensational character. Phelps’ first Olympic appearance was in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, in which he bagged a total of 6 gold medals – a record that comes second to swimmer Mark Spitz’ record of 7 gold medals in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. His comeback during the 2008 Olympics shattered Spitz’ to a record-breaking win of 8 gold medals.
The Quest for a New Record
With another shot at breaking the world record, Phelps is touted to bring home 10 gold medals from the upcoming Olympics. Apart from his chances to be selected in three relay events, it was confirmed that he will enter seven events at the US Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. Phelps registered for the following events for the trials:
- 200m individual medley
- 400m individual medley
- 100m butterfly
- 200m butterfly
- 100m freestyle
- 200m freestyle
- 200m backstroke
Phelps still faces the possibility of dropping out of the other events. In the 2008 Olympic swimming trials, he registered for 9 events, 3 of which he dropped. Reports claim that he might choose not to participate in the 400m individual medley – the most challenging swimming event in the Olympics. Phelps has declared before that he does not want to take part in the 400m individual medley anymore, although his coach Bob Bowman constantly compels him to do so.
